Notes One white faced duck was found dead during this count. Subsequentially more and more of these ducks (about 60 in total) began dying in the following weeks as well as 4 sacred ibis, 4 hadeda ibis, 2 Egyptian goose and 2 spurwing goose. These deaths were reported to the EKZNW on the 15 Feb 2008. Dr Gerhard Verdoorn (Birdlife Director and Chairman of the Poison working group) was informed on the 18 Feb 2008. He suggested that the cause for this was avian botulism triggered by the water condition and high temperatures. His recommendations were carried out ie all carcasses were removed and buried, and the authorities responsible were notified (this has proved problematic as the authorities have not responded to our urgent queries) to flush out the sewage system. We did notice the water levels in the sewage system had increased during this time - so perhaps the authorities responsible did carry out some action to try and flush the system out. We have had some rain (100 mm) since the 6th March which will hopefully dilute the sewage system a little. The last reported death was on the 5 March 2008. Species sheet Notes
