Notes The water level was the highest ever recorded. The flamingo breeding island was completely submerged, with 73 lesser flamingo just managing to stand on the flooded island. Kimberley has received more than the annual rainfall up to early February 2011, and hence numbers of birds may be lower than usual as birds have dispersed to temporary wetlands. Flamingos are normally not counted during the CWAC counts as they tend to be severely inaccurate, as the species is best counted using aerial photography. The estimates are as follows: lesser flamingo (50 000) and greater flamingo (250). Grey-headed gulls, cattle egret and sacred ibis appeared to be breeding in the south western corner of the dam.
