Notes This was the first count done after the 28 August 2008 breaching of the lagoon and the water level had dropped so significantly in a 2 month period that we were able to walk on the mud flats almost into the middle of the lagoon for quite a distance around the lagoon. We had to make our way back towards a more solid surface in one spot only until we got nearer to the Benguela Cove Estate. The water level at the bridge was reduced to a narrow channel and this channel remained a narrow passage of water all the way to past the Arabella Hotel where it widened slightly but in general the water line had receded at least 50 to 60 metres from its high water level. Great for counting and for being able to walk around the boundary fence at the Benguela Cove Estate but very disappointing as far as bird numbers were concerned.
