    Notes Number of birds and number of species lower than usual for a summer count on the salt pans section. The Cerebos salt works have closed and now no production takes place. Can this have impacted the reduced numbers? 3 Salt pans close to the R27 bridge completely dry ... nothing. Last 5 years summer counts BW STILTS lowest just 22, AVOCET lowest just 1, CURLEW SANDPIPER low at 83. Due to the very high salt content in river many ducks and coots now not present. However, high saline has killed many of the reeds along the river edge making visibility much better and more mud banks for waders to feed. LITTLE EGRETS are breeding in the eucalyptus near the Sishen bridge, 3 nests with 2 young birds in each.
