Brief_description |
A long-established active salt works created in cleared mangrove forest and the adjacent scrubland inland from it. The largest pans on the seaward side change in water level somewhat but always remain with reasonable levels - they are not normally allowed to dry out. The later pans can be flooded or dry depending on where they're at in the salt cycle. Large numbers of waders use the pans for roosting over the high tide - flying in from the creeks and mudflats among the mangroves and along the shoreline over the high tide. The section of tidal creek that is visible from the main inlet pump for the saltworks is also included in the counts. |
Physical_features |
Man-made pools varying in depth from c.1 m to dry. Also some natural mangrove-fringed tidal creeks. |
Hydrological_features |
Man pans are entirely man-made and tightly managed with regard to waterlevels to maximise salt production. Wide tidal creeks with some narrow tributaries that leave exposed mud banks at low tide and are flooded over the high tide. |
Ecological_features |
Very high salinity levels in some of the ponds which still attract large numbers of waders. The less saline pans are deeper and hold some fish which attracts cormorants and other fish-eating birds. Seaward side of the site is totally bordered with de |
