Brief_description |
A seasonal lake that in years of heavy rains (e.g. El Nino 1997/98) can be very extensive and hold large numbers of waterbirds. As it dries out, the edge is turned into farmland and currently (2016) much of the lake is actually cultivated with only a small residual section that holds water. The count area has therefore reduced substantially from when first counted - reflected in the number of birds recorded. |
Physical_features |
As in many other seasonal lakes in the area, a shallow valley surrounded by low hills that historically were covered in dense forest and thicket. Over the 15-20 years since the late 1990s, this cover has been almost completely removed and had poor farming techniques employed on steep slopes leading to heavy erosion and siltation of the lake. The lake is therefore now largely filled in with sediment and farmed. Open water and mud is restricted now to c. 3 ha area (c. 300 x 100 m). |
Hydrological_features |
Seasonal wetland depending 100% on rainfall for water - there are no drainage channels running into it. When it gets extremely full, water will drain through a stream outlet to the north-east towards the Sabaki River. |
Ecological_features |
Lake Jilore lies immediately adjacent to the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest reserve. Historically it was an important watering site for elephant and other wildlife. However an elephant fence erected along the forest boundary has stopped any elephants accessing the lake water and this environmental service has gone. Much of the natural habitat in the surrounding hills and area has been cleared for poor quality farming that has led to heavy erosion and degradation of the land and habitats in general. |
