Brief_description |
Trout dams on the Sterkspruit River, with open water and some fringing reedy vegetation. Counts are available only for summer and winter 1997, when 19 species were recorded in summer and 16 in winter, with a very similar total count in each season. The commonest species, Sacred Ibis, was more numerous in winter, while Blacksmith Plover was common in both seasons; Reed Cormorant, Cattle Egret and Hadeda Ibis were commoner in summer. Purple Heron and African Black Duck are noteworthy. Important threats are the closing down of the fisheries station, which will affect the water supply to the dams, and suspected poisoning of birds, particularly Sacred Ibis, at a nearby rubbish dump. Other threats include livestock grazing/trampling, and overhead powerlines. |
