| Brief_description |
| Formerly open water with reedbeds, islands where duck bred, and emergent grass (increased during drought in 1992-93). Now surrounded by Eucalyptus trees, planted 5-6 years ago; as trees grew, pan dried out and open water disappeared; counts were discontinued in 1994. Formerly excellent for waterfowl and shorebirds; even in 1993-94 good counts were made of White Pelican, Whitefaced Duck, African Jacana, Kittlitz's and Threebanded Plovers, Redwinged Pratincole, and Whiskered and Whitewinged Tern. Longtoed Plover occurred formerly. The pan basin is still moist to wet, with dense, grass-dominated vegetation and some Typha; Black Crake and Redchested Flufftail were heard in 1997 (T. Wood). The site will probably dry out completely with further tree growth. |
